What Is The Programme About

RMDC is pleased to present ‘Creative Intensive’ programme sharing the unique company approach to the process of creation which can be scaled and adapted to different movement and aesthetic sensibilities, venues and budget.

Our programme pilot (first round) is for emerging dance professionals (aged 18–35), and designed to explore the relationship between movement, light, and sound as artistic and dramaturgical tools. It will be advantageous to have an idea for choreography, based on which the knowledge gained during the intensive course can be applied.

The intensive course will be run for 5 days to:

● Equip participants with the creative and technical tools to develop new work

● Share RMDC’s unique methodologies honed over 30 years of interdisciplinary practice

● Establish the foundation for a sustainable educational initiative

This intensive is designed for individuals looking to deepen their understanding of processes & possibilities in creating and producing their own dance or performance pieces. Participants will explore how light shapes perception, how sound sculpts space, and how these elements intersect with movement to create layered, emotionally resonant performances. Our goal is to equip mentees not only with practical skills, but with an expanded artistic perspective.

The programme leader is Dr Russell Maliphant OBE - a renowned choreographer, celebrated for his innovative work combining movement, light, and body dynamics. The intensive will also include working with lighting and music specialists as curators.

  • The part where participants will gain theoretical knowledge and deepen in Russell Maliphant’s team approach. Illustrations and presentations from the programme leader and sound & light curators will help you understand relationship of light to dark (especially in a black box theatre context), the magic of concealing and revealing, shape of light to shape of figure.

  • The part where participants will be introduced to practical part of the creation process and will attempt to change the dynamics of the performative act through:

    • intensity of light vs Intensity of movement & sound

    • contrast or connection

    • conflict and juxtaposition

  • The part where programme participants will able to create their own short showcases and present them to their curators and invited audience. The purpose of the showcase is to demonstrate Light as Fluid architecture for the space, Sculpturing the space, body with light and music & vice verse, underline warmth and cold, silence and loudness through ‘colour’ and ‘sound’ of movement.
